Census BTOS covers employer businesses excluding farms. Conditional populations are stated in each section. S means suppressed, not zero. Multiple-select categories need not total 100%. Estimates are not worker percentages; differences may not be statistically significant. The supplement is collected as needed, not on a confirmed six-month release schedule.

State estimates exclude the separate Census “XX” group for multi-unit companies operating across multiple sectors or states. Those companies are not assigned to an individual state in this download. Puerto Rico is outside this dashboard’s 50-state-and-D.C. view.
SOURCE & METHODOLOGY
Public data. Clear boundaries.
Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS). Estimates describe employer businesses excluding farms—not households, workers, or all businesses. The national estimate is supplied by Census; it is not an average of the states.
Core estimates are released every two weeks. Detailed AI supplement questions are a separate fixed snapshot with question-specific populations. Suppressed values are never replaced with zero. Comparable core trends begin with the new wording released December 4, 2025.
